Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a Medicare rebate when I see a psychologist?

A: Yes. If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) you are eligible for up to 10 Medicare rebates per calendar year as per the current legislation.

How do I get a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

A: To access a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) you need to arrange a referral from your GP. This referral needs to be brought to your first appointment with your Northern Beaches Psychology & Assessment clinician. Your GP will determine if you meet the relevant criteria for a Mental Health Treatment Plan.

Please ensure that your MHTP includes the below details. Please contact your GP Practice to amend your MHTP if it does not meet the below criteria.

  • Signed and dated by the referring GP

  • Patient’s name

  • Patient’s date of birth

  • Patient’s address

  • Number of sessions the patient is being referred for (maximum of 6 sessions on an initial referral)

Does the Medicare Rebate cover the cost of my session?

A: No. There is an out of pocket expense depending on the fee structure of the Northern Beaches psychologist you book with. You will be required to pay the full fee at the time of your appointment, and you will receive a rebate from Medicare a few days later.

Do I have to process my own Medicare Rebate?

A: No. your Northern Beaches Psychology & Assessment psychologist will process your Medicare rebate following your session and once your session is paid for.

What does it mean if I have Private Health Insurance?

A: Please communicate directly with your private health provider to arrange rebates. It is important to remember that if you make a claim with your private health provider, the invoice is no longer Medicare eligible (and vice versa).

Can I see a psychologist without a referral?

A: Yes, no referral is needed in order to attend sessions. A referral (MHTP) is only required if you wish to claim Medicare rebates.
